When The Moustache Was King!

L to R: Carlin Park lifeguard Pat Crowley, the baby is Ryan Berube who grew up to swim in the Olympics. On the right is lifeguard Dave MacGregor. Picture taken in 1973 or 74.

Where Are They Now? Bruce Lanahan

Bruce has been living in Dallas for the last twenty years where he works as a Financial Advisor.

He still has family in Florida and visits the state several times a year. Bruce is still in touch with Jay Cole, Sheldon Gifford, Don Copeland and Sam Plummer, among others.

He wrote "You know, I moved to Jupiter at the beginning of 9th grade and left at the end of my junior year, so I was barely there three years, but the memories and the relationships were far more significant than the time spent."

Bruce finally married "at the ripe old age of 53" and is pictured here with his wife, Holly and children Annie (2) and Rye (8 mos.)

As usual- click photo to enlarge.

Where Are They Now? John Chisolm

One of the purposes of this site is to catch up with old friends. John Chisholm '71 Class President stumbled across the site recently and filled me in on his whereabouts.

Most people who knew John remember that he graduated from MIT and settled in California.

In 1997 he founded CustomerSat a Silicon Valley-based customer feedback company. This year he merged with MarketTools, a leading provider of online market research based in San Francisco. Together they form the third-largest online market research firm in the world.

He chairs the MIT Club of Northern California and travels extensively.

John's mother moved to California after his father passed away several years ago. His sister lives on the west coast of Florida.

He closed the merger deal while traveling to Angkor Wat, Cambodia in March/April 2008.
He is pictured here visiting a 12th century Buddhist (or Hindu) Temple where, apparently, he also discovered the Fountain of Youth.

Writing In The Round

Sue Brandt aka Mrs. Kent Howerton, sent in this stationary mailed to her from Pam Hutchinson in 1972.

Pam bought the stationary from the Junior class stationary/magazine drive. The funds were raised to finance the prom.

The back featured circular lines. I don't know WHAT they're hiding but Pam and Sue refuse to let me read it.

Vote Early, Vote Often!

I just came across the original "art" for the 1970 campaign for Junior Class officers.

I really don't understand the point I was trying to make and neither did our constituents who swept us into office anyway.

Bumper Sticker #2

Restoring the West Palm Beach Courthouse to its original 1916 version meant tearing down the facade built around it in the late '60s. Among the artifacts recovered by the contractor was this vintage bumper sticker printed circa 1970.

I copied the original (the new owner wouldn't give up this priceless bit of local history.) The original had white letters on a green field.

I always thought this thing was a riot. Perhaps someone with better photoshop skills than I can restore it to its former glory.

Time On My Hands

Last month I took a buy-out from the Palm Beach Post after working there for a little over thirty years. I'm still getting over the shock of it all but looking forward to time spent in my studio where I can sculpt and paint.

I'll try to do better in keeping up with the blog. Over the summer I heard from John Chisolm, '71 and Bruce Lanahan. '72. Updates on them coming soon.

Bookmark the site. Send in memories, pics and ephemera to share!

About the artwork- I drew this to parody the Post's "Ask A Local" campaign- a little morale builder for the 300 Posties who left the newspaper this summer.

My brother Steve and I are negotiating a show in a Palm Beach Gardens gallery. These things are a logistical nightmare and this was pitched to us on short notice.

Details coming and of course you're all invited.

Two More

Ralph Mellone, '71 sent two more pictures of their 1973 camping trip (posted earlier.)

Bob Shanley's Good Deed

Underclassman Bob Shanley contributed this Feb. 29, 1968 Beacon News front page. Lots of fun reading here. Who remembers the teachers strike that year?

Thanks Bob. you'll get your merit badge when I see a scan of the OTHER side of that page.

Where Are They Now? Cris Tharp

After spending most of her adult life in the frozen north, Cris (pictured at top with "Allie Baba" in February) moved back to Jupiter about ten years ago.

She works at the Jupiter Medical Center and lives in Tequesta where she can enjoy a view of both the lighthouse and Pasquale's restaurant from her balcony.

Little has changed about Cris except for the brand new hip she had installed recently when she wore out the old one after working out too much. We call her "Calamity."

Cris graduated in '71. She was Editor in Chief of the Warcry. Samples attached.

Carlin Park

L to R: Bobby Brett, Mary Alice Laying and Brian Crooks celebrate our nation's birthday by sneering in the face of the Volstead Act.

A year or so later the state of Florida lowered the drinking age to eighteen. Chaos ensued and the law was expelled like so many classmates were by Onion (the bouncer) at the Lighthouse Lounge.

Fourth Of July

Here's another from the same contact sheet. L to R: Pat Crowley, Pam Scoville and Steve Sanderson at Carlin Park.

The Beach Boys (and Girls)

L to R: Bob Skakandy, unknown girl behind him, Brian Crooks, Bobby Brett,Mary Alice

Laying, Pam Scoville and Steve Sanderson.

This is a scan of a contact sheet of photos Steve Crowley took at Carlin Park on July 4, 1972.

Sasquatch Or Classmate? You Make The Call!

Ralph Mellone sent this photo of Brian Crooks deep in the woods somewhere. Some sort of camping trip.

I couldn't get the famous picture of Bigfoot out of my mind after seeing this.

IIRC Brian was almost as hairy and just as elusive as his hirsute doppleganger.

Where are you, Brian? Click, click, is this thing on?

Overture...Dim the Lights...

The Jupiter High Players present BLAZING GUNS AT ROARING GULCH and THE LABORS OF LOVE- April 17, 1971.

The program encouraged the audience to "boo and hiss the villian and cheer the hero." They did neither. Still - this double bill of melodrama was an epic cultural event in our tiny seaside hamlet.

The national reputation of the Jupiter High Players drew show business luminaries (Como, Reynolds, Wynette, Namath et al) to Jupiter's rich cultural ferment.

Editor's note: Como was here first but the rest of it's all true.

Top to bottom:

1. Page of the program.

2. Pam Jarski, Pat Crowley, Ralph Mellone, Mark Walker

3. Mary Kay Adelsak, Rick Geiger, Jeff Williamson, Robin Couey

4. Ralph Mellone, Paula Cox, Mary Thayer, Carol Buice

The First Beacon

Pages one and two of a four-page issue. The bottoms are cropped and will be added later. Check out the "Beatnik Party" on page two. The paper is dated "Nov. 26, 1959. Some familiar looking names here- is that Joe McGrath's older brother?

Just Add Glue, Dude!

It's All a Blur

Two pictures that never made it into the 1971 yearbook. The prom was held at the Helen Wilkes Hotel (called the George Washington at the time) in downtown West Palm Beach. The building was demolished last year. Senior Lou Ann Lewis was crowned Prom Queen that night.
